Spec Terminology

  • Entry

SHR consists of Entries. Each entry is a statement about something relevant to the subject of the overall record that the entry is added to. Entries represent someone's knowledge, at a point in time. Entries are data elements with metadata (see Data Element for more information). Metadata captures the provenance and other information common to all types of entries.

  • Data Element

Data elements are built from simpler data elements or primitive types which are the same as in FHIR. Data Elements are atomic or molecular. Atomic data elements are composed of just one value. Molecular data elements are composed of at most 1 value and zero to many fields. A data element value is what the element IS. A data element field is what the element HAS (or QUALIFY the value).

  • Value Set

A value set is a set of values that can be used as the value of a data element or as one of its fields. A value set specifies a set of codes drawn from one or more code systems.

  • Code System

A Code System is a list of codes defining a set of possible values. Code systems define which codes (symbols and/or expressions) exist, and how they are understood.

  • Mapping (coming soon)

Each data element in the SHR can be mapped to other standards to facilitate interoperability and transitions to the SHR. For example, a mapping of the SHR to HL7 Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) profiles is defined using mappings. Each value and field of each data element can be mapped to corresponding representations in the target standard.
